Hash Generator Documentation

Use the free Hash Generator →

Create MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 checksums locally in your browser, and compare text digests with a published value.

What does it do?

Create MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512 checksums locally in your browser, and compare text digests with a published value.

How does it work?

SiteIndex computes text and local file checksums in your browser. SHA digests use the Web Crypto API and MD5 uses a local implementation; files are never uploaded. Enter a published digest to compare it against the selected algorithm.

When to use it
  • Generate a checksum to verify text or file integrity.
  • Compare a downloaded file's hash against a published checksum.
  • Produce a SHA hash for a development or QA workflow.
Inputs and outputs
Input
Text, files, or values entered in the browser, depending on the tool.
Output
A result shown in the browser that can be reviewed or copied where supported.
Limitations
  • Text is encoded as UTF-8; a file digest is computed over its bytes. These differ if encodings or line endings differ.
  • A checksum is not a password hash, keyed MAC, or proof that a file is trustworthy.
Privacy and data handling

Inputs for this browser-side tool are processed locally and are not sent to SiteIndex. Normal page analytics may still be collected as described in the Privacy Policy. Read the Privacy Policy.

How to use it

  1. Paste text and select MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512.
  2. Select Generate hash for the text digest, or enter a published checksum and choose Verify.
  3. To checksum bytes instead, expand Hash a file and choose a local file. MD5 and SHA-1 are legacy algorithms; use SHA-256 or stronger for security.
